Four workers were killed and two others injured after a fire broke out at a shoe factory in northwest Delhi’s Mangolpuri Industrial Area Phase-I around 9:30 p.m. Friday.
The Delhi Fire Service sent 20 fire tenders after receiving a call at 9:32 p.m. Police and firefighters rescued six people who were found unconscious inside the building and took them to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Four were declared dead, while the two survivors remained under treatment, one in intensive care.
The dead were identified as Ashok, 25, Harihar, 40, Lal Babu, 38, and Prem Chand, 50, according to The Indian Express. Relatives said Ashok and Harihar had stayed late to work additional shifts.
Officials cited by The Indian Express alleged that the factory lacked a fire clearance certificate and adequate ventilation. Workers and fire officials said exits were locked or obstructed, the staircase to the terrace was blocked with materials, and windows and ventilation openings were sealed. A surviving worker said employees fled toward the terrace after discovering that the main exit was locked.
Delhi Police registered a culpable homicide case Saturday and arrested the building supervisor and the father of the factory’s owners. Police had summoned the owners, who had not yet been located, The Indian Express reported.
Officials said a short circuit may have started the fire, but the cause had not been conclusively determined. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
