India’s opposition INDIA bloc staged a symbolic “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on Saturday, accusing him of overseeing improper voter deletions during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The mock parliamentary proceeding was held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence and presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. Kharge introduced a motion containing six allegations, including that Kumar conspired with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, acted at the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and oversaw the deletion of about 13.2 crore voters. Participants unanimously adopted the symbolic motion by a show of hands.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called the exercise a “political weapon” and said institutional avenues had been closed to the opposition. Several voters also described alleged wrongful removals from electoral rolls, including one man reportedly marked as dead and others asked to provide documents after years of voting.
The proceeding had no constitutional or legal force. Under India’s Constitution, the chief election commissioner can be removed only through a parliamentary process requiring a special majority, on grounds and through a procedure similar to those governing the removal of a Supreme Court judge.
The Election Commission says the voter-roll revision is intended to ensure accurate lists. The commission and the BJP deny opposition claims that the process is being manipulated to benefit the ruling party. The opposition planned a rally in Delhi on Sunday seeking Kumar’s resignation.
