North Korea fired about 10 projectiles, including short-range ballistic missiles, toward the sea off its east coast on Thursday, according to South Korea’s military.
The missiles were launched at about 12:30 p.m. from the Wonsan area and traveled roughly 250 kilometers, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. Japan’s Defence Ministry said the apparent ballistic missile did not seem to have landed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
South Korea increased surveillance, maintained readiness for further launches and shared information with the United States and Japan. Its presidential National Security Office convened an emergency meeting and called the launches a serious violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
The launch occurred amid heightened tensions along the inter-Korean border. Seoul has accused North Korea of planting mines that wounded three South Korean soldiers in the Demilitarized Zone on Sept. 21, an allegation Pyongyang denies. North Korea has also said it would prepare loudspeakers for anti-South Korean broadcasts along the border, while its artillery batteries have recently been visible from South Korea.
North Korean state media separately reported that leader Kim Jong Un attended a demonstration involving attack drones, tactical cruise missiles and multiple rocket launchers, where he called for greater use of drones and artificial intelligence in the military.
