Scottish police open inquiries into Andrew, Epstein and Maxwell’s reported Balmoral stay

Police Scotland is investigating a reported 1999 visit to Balmoral by Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell as guests of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew.

The force said Friday that it had received information and that “active inquiries are ongoing,” although they remain at a very early stage. Police did not identify any suspected offences or provide details of the information under examination, saying the inquiry was evidence-led and focused on the needs of victim-survivors.

The Daily Express, which first reported the inquiry, said it concerned allegations that women were trafficked to the royal estate in the Scottish Highlands. Police Scotland has not confirmed that claim. Images released by the U.S. Department of Justice appear to show Andrew and Epstein shooting at Balmoral during the 1999 visit.

Epstein was convicted in 2008 of soliciting sex from girls and died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking a minor.

Several other British police forces are reviewing information linked to the release of U.S. records concerning Epstein. The National Police Chiefs’ Council said there is no national investigation. Andrew, who has acknowledged friendships with Epstein and Maxwell, has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
