Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won an unprecedented fourth term after defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s presidential runoff, completing a comeback after trailing in the first round.
Official results gave Lula about 51.8% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, a margin of roughly 4.4 million votes. Lula became the first Brazilian presidential candidate since the country’s return to democracy to win a runoff after losing the opening round.
Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would seek to annul the election after the Supreme Court extended voting nationwide by two hours. The extension followed complaints about transportation problems in some cities and requests to keep polls open in areas affected by heavy rain. Bolsonaro called the decision unacceptable.
His Liberal Party nevertheless recognized the result on Monday. In a statement, party leader Valdemar Costa Neto said it accepted the outcome proclaimed by the Superior Electoral Court while maintaining that concerns about the election should be addressed through democratic debate.
U.S. President Donald Trump alleged without evidence that the vote appeared “rigged.” Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin called those remarks unfounded. Leaders from several countries congratulated Lula.
Bolsonaro also said he would comply with a federal police order to surrender his passports, denying that he intended to leave Brazil. He described himself as the leader of the opposition as Lula prepared for another term with a Congress containing many Bolsonaro allies.
