Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri filed his nomination on Saturday as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate for the November 12 Rajya Sabha byelection in Madhya Pradesh.
Puri submitted his papers at the state Assembly in Bhopal alongside Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Madhya Pradesh BJP president Hemant Khandelwal and other party leaders. The BJP announced his candidacy on October 28.
The seat became vacant after Union Minister of State L Murugan resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the Union Council of Ministers on October 14. His term had been due to continue until April 2030.
Puri’s current Rajya Sabha term representing Uttar Pradesh expires on November 25. He is not a Lok Sabha member and must remain a member of either house of Parliament to continue in the Union Cabinet beyond the six-month limit set for ministers who are not MPs.
The BJP holds 164 seats in Madhya Pradesh’s 230-member Assembly, placing Puri in a strong position to win. A candidate would require 116 votes if all legislators participate. Voting and counting are scheduled for November 12.
Yadav said Puri’s administrative experience would benefit Madhya Pradesh. Congress leader Umang Singhar criticised the nomination and questioned why Puri was contesting from the state after being omitted from the BJP’s recent list of Rajya Sabha candidates from Uttar Pradesh.
