The Trump administration plans to deport more than 150 Afghan immigrants to Afghanistan through Pakistan, according to court documents and reports citing U.S. officials. The first charter flight could leave immigration facilities in Louisiana as early as Monday.
A senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement official acknowledged in a federal court filing in Virginia that one Afghan immigrant had been scheduled for a flight from Alexandria, Louisiana, to Pakistan, “with further transport onward to Afghanistan,” The Associated Press reported. Federal prosecutors disclosed in a separate Oklahoma case that another Afghan immigrant was scheduled for deportation to Afghanistan next week.
The United States does not have formal relations with Afghanistan’s Taliban government. U.S. officials told The New York Times that Pakistan would oversee the deportees’ onward removal to Afghanistan after they arrived there.
Advocacy groups said the planned removals could expose deportees to Taliban retaliation. AfghanEvac said those facing deportation include relatives of Afghans who assisted U.S. forces before the Taliban took control in August 2021. It was not clear whether any of the people designated for removal have court orders protecting them from return to Afghanistan.
The Department of Homeland Security told the AP that ICE does not comment on prospective removal operations, citing operational security and personnel safety. Pakistani Embassy officials did not immediately respond to the AP’s requests for comment.
