Thousands of people demonstrated across Germany on Saturday in youth-led protests demanding greater education funding, relief from rising living costs and opposition to compulsory military service.
The campaign group Gen Z Regelt organised events in 34 cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg. Organisers said more than 100,000 people participated nationwide, but no official national count was immediately available. Police estimated about 5,000 people gathered at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, while organisers put the figure there at 10,000. Other police estimates included 6,700 participants in Hamburg, 2,500 in Freiburg and more than 1,500 in Frankfurt.
Demonstrations were largely peaceful during the day, with some participants wearing Halloween costumes. Disorder later broke out in several cities. In Frankfurt, masked rioters smashed windows and looted stores, while police said stones, fireworks and Molotov cocktails were thrown at emergency personnel. Police deployed water cannon and pepper spray, closed part of the city’s main shopping district and arrested a suspect after two weapons were taken from a looted gun store. Several officers were reported injured in violence nationwide.
Police also used water cannon in Hamburg and Cologne. Barriers were set on fire in Hamburg, while Cologne police halted a planned march over covered faces and pyrotechnics, allowing a stationary rally to continue. Authorities reported additional confrontations in Berlin, Leipzig and Bonn.
