Brighton defeated Premier League leaders Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday, while Chelsea’s 2-0 win over 10-man Manchester United left Michael Carrick’s side just above the relegation zone.

Yasin Ayari scored Brighton’s winner in the 11th minute at the Etihad Stadium, and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen helped repel City’s second-half pressure. The result was Brighton’s first away victory over City in 18 attempts and inflicted a second consecutive league defeat on Enzo Maresca’s team after seven straight wins to open the season. Arsenal can overtake City when they visit Liverpool on Sunday.

At Stamford Bridge, United had a Matheus Cunha goal disallowed for offside during a competitive first half, but Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead five minutes after the restart. Lisandro Martinez then received a second yellow card for a challenge on Wesley Fofana that resulted in a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted in the 64th minute.

United’s ninth consecutive match without a win was followed by Coventry City’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland, which moved Coventry above Carrick’s team. Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 loss at Brentford and Crystal Palace’s defeat at Tottenham kept United out of the bottom three. United are one point and one place above the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Tottenham beat 10-man Palace 2-0 after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off in the 13th minute. Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke scored as Spurs recorded a third successive league victory.
