Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc nor the opposition secured a governing majority in Israel’s legislative election, according to provisional results reported after more than 99 percent of ballots were counted.
Haaretz reported that Netanyahu’s bloc won 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while an opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot held 48. Arab-led parties secured a combined 19 seats. A coalition requires at least 61 seats. The results remain subject to change until they are certified and formally announced.
The election drew turnout of 77.7 percent, the highest since 1999, according to The Hindu. Channel 12 exit polls estimated turnout among Arab citizens at nearly 80 percent, potentially the highest level in at least a decade.
Opposition leaders began discussing possible coalition arrangements. Eisenkot met former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Democrats chairman Yair Golan, while Golan separately met Mansour Abbas, leader of the United Arab List. Eisenkot has previously ruled out partnering with Arab-led parties, complicating efforts to assemble a majority.
Netanyahu’s Likud led the popular vote during the count. Likud also promoted unsubstantiated allegations of election theft involving Arab-led parties and possible foreign assistance. Central Elections Committee head Noam Sohlberg said he could not verify claims of foreign interference but asked the Shin Bet security agency to investigate them because of their seriousness.
