President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration would formally ban the terms “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in relevant government documents, favoring “super intelligence” and “SI” instead.

“When will The Wall Street Journal start calling Artificial Intelligence (AI), a very bad and inaccurate name, SI (Super Intelligence), the name which virtually everyone else is using, or soon will be,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He said the existing terminology would soon be officially banned “in all relevant documents, and everything else, due to its inaccuracy.”

The announcement follows a Sept. 29 executive order directing the executive branch, to the maximum extent permitted by law, to use “super intelligence” and “SI” in place of the established terms, according to Variety. Several federal agencies have said they would adopt the terminology, The National reported.

The change has not been widely adopted outside the federal government. Most technology companies, experts, media organizations and foreign governments continue to use “artificial intelligence” and “AI.” The National reported that the International Monetary Fund told Reuters it would not change its terminology despite requests from the White House.

The term “artificial intelligence” was coined by computer scientist John McCarthy while organizing the 1956 Dartmouth conference, an early landmark in the field.
