Dockworkers stage international action against arms shipments

Dockworkers and protesters at more than 100 ports across 22 countries staged strikes, walkouts and demonstrations on Friday as part of an international campaign opposing arms shipments and calling for improved working conditions.

Unions in France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey and Morocco jointly demanded an end to wars in the Middle East, including the Gaza war, and an end to what they described as the militarization of ports. “Ports must not be used for the transport of weapons, ammunition, military equipment and troops,” their statement said.

Participation varied by location, ranging from full-day strikes to shorter stoppages and rallies. Greece’s ENEDEP union called a strike at Piraeus, while protesters gathered outside Istanbul’s Haydarpasa port. Demonstrations were planned at several Italian ports during a broader general strike over living costs, wages and military spending. France’s CGT federation called one-day strikes at major ports, also protesting government budget proposals it said threatened social protections.

At the Port of Elizabeth in New Jersey, pro-Palestinian activists held a vehicle caravan targeting Israeli shipping company Zim and encouraged dockworkers to refuse to handle Israeli cargo, Middle East Eye reported.

The overall disruption was not immediately clear. Logistics company C.H. Robinson warned of possible delays at participating ports, while marine insurance specialist Marcus Baker told ABC News that a 24-hour strike was unlikely to materially disrupt global trade, though perishable and time-sensitive shipments could be affected.
