Rescuers searched mangled carriages in central Spain on Thursday after the death toll from a collision involving two trains rose to 69, with dozens more people injured.
The crash occurred Wednesday in Toledo province when a train operated by state-owned Renfe struck the rear of a stationary train run by private operator Iryo. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said several trains had stopped because of a signal failure before the Renfe service was authorized to proceed at normal speed despite the train ahead. The government described that authorization as “inexplicable,” and calls mounted for a full investigation.
Cranes worked through the night to lift sections of wreckage, including an overturned carriage. Regional leader Emiliano García-Page said human remains had been recovered during the overnight operation and cautioned that the search was continuing, although officials did not believe more victims were beneath the overturned carriage.
Spain declared three days of national mourning, while leaders of the country’s two main political parties suspended events ahead of a November 29 snap election. Train drivers also proceeded with a previously planned strike seeking greater investment in rail safety. Unions said safety discussions held after another fatal accident in January had ended in April without sufficient action.
Pope Leo XIV offered condolences to victims’ families, wished the injured a rapid recovery and expressed support for rescue workers.
