A fire has largely destroyed the Kehlsteinhaus, the Nazi-era mountain retreat known as the “Eagle’s Nest,” near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, German media reported. The blaze, which began late Friday, flared up again overnight after emergency crews had battled it through Saturday.
About 200 firefighters and other emergency personnel were involved in the operation at the remote site, which stands more than 1,800 metres above sea level. The location and snowy conditions complicated efforts to extinguish the flames. Fire chief Michael Brandl said on Saturday that crews were putting out the remaining fire, but no one had entered the building because it was at risk of collapse.
No injuries were reported. Police detained a 33-year-old German man near the scene and are investigating whether he was connected to the fire. Authorities have not announced a cause or possible motive, although German media reported that arson was suspected.
Built in 1937-38 as a guest house for senior Nazi officials and their visitors, the Kehlsteinhaus is separate from Adolf Hitler’s nearby Berghof residence. The Bavarian state-owned building survived the Second World War and later became a restaurant and historical site containing an exhibition about its Nazi past.
