Apple has introduced its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, offering 14-inch and 16-inch models with a new tandem OLED screen marketed as the PROLED XDR display. The laptops are available for preorder and are scheduled to begin shipping Nov. 6, with prices starting at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch version.
The computers run macOS and retain full keyboard and trackpad controls, making touch optional. Apple said existing software will translate screen taps into conventional clicks, while interface elements can expand to make them easier to touch. The company also redesigned the hinge to reduce screen movement during touch input and applied an oleophobic coating to resist fingerprints.
Apple says the displays reach 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness, provide a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and support refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The screens are designed to compensate for pixel age and usage, addressing OLED degradation over time. The laptops use M5 Pro or M5 Max processors and can be configured with up to 128GB of memory and 16TB of storage.
Other changes include a Dynamic Island-style area around the webcam, thinner bezels, reduced weight and the return of an illuminated Apple logo. The machines include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. Fully upgraded configurations can exceed $14,000, according to Apple’s online configurator.
