The eurozone economy expanded by 0.4% in the third quarter of 2026, slowing from 0.6% in the previous quarter but exceeding the 0.2% growth forecast in a Reuters poll, according to a preliminary Eurostat estimate reported by CNBC.

Performance varied across the currency bloc. France’s economy unexpectedly contracted by 0.1% amid political conflict over efforts to reduce its budget deficit and debt. Germany grew by 0.2%, while Italy’s economy was flat. Spain expanded by 0.6%, and Ireland reported 5.5% growth, although Irish GDP is often volatile because of the large multinational sector.

The Netherlands also grew by 0.6% from the previous quarter and 2.1% from a year earlier, according to Statistics Netherlands. Dutch growth was supported by exports and household and government consumption, while investment declined by 0.1%. Manufacturing made the largest contribution among Dutch industries, led by machinery production.

The European Central Bank held interest rates steady on Thursday and said higher energy prices had not yet produced broader second-round effects, though it warned that downside risks to growth had increased. Analysts cited weak productivity, demographic pressures and declining industrial competitiveness as continuing constraints on the eurozone economy.
