Four Italian personnel were killed and 11 others injured when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter serving with the European Union’s EUFOR mission crashed near Brčko in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday, October 29.
EUFOR said the aircraft went down near Gorice while conducting routine training. Fifteen people were aboard. A spokesperson for Brčko hospital said three died at the scene and a fourth died after being taken to the hospital.
The Italian government said everyone aboard was an Italian national. Italy’s Defence Ministry identified those killed as two army personnel and two members of the Italian Red Cross Volunteer Military Corps. The ministry said none of the injured was in life-threatening condition, while EUFOR reported that they were receiving treatment and were stable.
Bosnian emergency services and EUFOR personnel responded to the crash and transported the casualties to medical facilities in Brčko. EUFOR said no civilians were injured and no civilian infrastructure, property or vehicles were damaged.
The cause of the crash has not been established. EUFOR said it had opened a full investigation and would release further information after it was verified.
