Indian filmmaker Sanjay Gupta died on October 30 after suffering a head injury in a fall at his home in Versova, Mumbai. Reports differed on his age, placing it at either 57 or 59.
Mumbai’s Versova police registered an accidental death report and opened an investigation. Police said Gupta was suspected to have slipped on his kitchen floor while his wife, two sons and a house help were asleep. His family discovered him later and took him to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Police said the family had raised no objections and that investigators had found nothing suspicious.
Gupta’s last rites were held in Mumbai, attended by relatives and members of the film industry, including Abhishek Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Rajpal Yadav and Rakesh Roshan.
Known for crime dramas and action films, Gupta made his directing debut with *Aatish: Feel the Fire* in 1994. His films included *Kaante*, *Musafir*, *Zinda*, *Shootout at Wadala*, *Kaabil* and *Mumbai Saga*. He also produced and co-wrote *Shootout at Lokhandwala*.
Actors and filmmakers including Sanjay Dutt, Hansal Mehta, Kajol, Suniel Shetty and Anupam Kher paid tribute. Dutt said he and Gupta had recently discussed a sequel to *Kaante* and pledged to make *Kaante 2* in Gupta’s memory.
