A traditional group photograph at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta was cancelled after European representatives objected to posing with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov over the war in Ukraine, according to The Hindu and The Japan Times.
On the sidelines Friday, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi met Lavrov and demanded the immediate release of a Japanese journalist detained in Russia’s Sakhalin region on suspicion of espionage. Kyodo News reported that it was the countries’ first formal foreign-ministerial meeting in about five years.
Motegi also urged Russia to take action toward a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine and raised unresolved bilateral matters, including Russian-held islands claimed by Japan. The two ministers agreed to maintain communication despite strained relations, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the meeting took place at Japan’s request and that Lavrov told Motegi a resumption of full bilateral dialogue would require Tokyo to abandon what Moscow calls its “unfriendly policy.” Relations deteriorated after Japan joined other Group of Seven countries in imposing sanctions over Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Separate tensions emerged over Poland’s participation. Lavrov criticized Poland’s invitation to the meeting as a breach of diplomatic rules, while Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said he had a message for Lavrov and called for a rapid Black Sea ceasefire to permit food shipments.
