Samsung shares fall as chip profits surge but investor-return plans disappoint

Samsung Electronics reported a sharp increase in third-quarter earnings as demand for artificial-intelligence infrastructure strained memory-chip supplies, but its shares fell after the company postponed details of its next shareholder-return policy until January.

Operating profit rose to 107.4 trillion won for the July-to-September period from 12.2 trillion won a year earlier, according to The Irish Times. Semiconductor operating profit jumped roughly 15-fold to 106.5 trillion won, though it was slightly below the 107.3 trillion won analyst estimate cited by LSEG. Group net income also missed estimates, Bloomberg reported.

Samsung said its high-bandwidth memory supply is sold out for next year as customers seek more chips used in AI data centers. It expects AI-related demand to outpace industry supply in 2027 and the broader chip market to remain tight through 2028 because new fabrication plants take time to build. The company has secured 10 long-term supply agreements and plans to begin mass production of next-generation HBM4e chips in the first half of 2027, the Taipei Times reported.

Samsung is sharply increasing capital expenditure to expand production and compete with SK Hynix and Micron. The Taipei Times put planned spending at 84.4 trillion won this year, up more than 60%. Investors nevertheless focused on Samsung’s less bullish supply outlook than SK Hynix’s and the absence of a new buyback or dividend announcement. Samsung shares fell as much as 6.2% after opening higher.
