Dennis Haskins, the actor best known for playing Principal Richard Belding on the television sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” has died at 75.
His death was announced by a friend and caretaker, according to Chattanooga station NewsChannel 9. An official cause of death was not confirmed. Dimples Karaoke, a venue Haskins regularly visited before it closed, said in an Instagram post that he had privately lived with Parkinson’s disease and other health concerns for about eight years.
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Nov. 18, 1950, Haskins attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he participated in student government, theater and the student newspaper. He helped organize campus entertainment and community fundraising events, including a basketball game that raised scholarship money for children of university and local police officers.
Haskins first portrayed Belding in the Disney Channel series “Good Morning, Miss Bliss” in 1988. The program was renamed “Saved by the Bell” the following year, and his role as the principal of Bayside High made him familiar to generations of viewers.
He later appeared in television and film projects including “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “A Million Ways to Die in the West.”
