Pentagon Data Breach Exposes Records of More Than 3 Million People

publishers 13articles 13first reported 29 Sep, 00:39 UTCdeveloping since 29 Sep · 5 editions

The Department of Defense is notifying millions of current and former U.S. military personnel and staff that their personal information was stolen in a months-long breach of Defense Manpower Data Center records.

According to a DMDC breach notice reported by TechCrunch, unauthorized users exploited a vulnerability in an unspecified file-sharing system between October 2025 and mid-July 2026. The compromised records were not encrypted and included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, sex, race and military service information.

A Pentagon official said approximately 2.8 million living people and nearly 300,000 deceased people were affected, according to Federal News Network, CNN and TechCrunch. Defense Department spokesperson Susan Gough confirmed the number of affected people to TechCrunch.

The identities of those responsible have not been disclosed. The Defense Department said it had no indication that the stolen information had been misused, but did not explain the basis for that assessment.

The DMDC maintains personnel records used to determine military benefits and entitlements, including health care and retirement. It also supports identity management for service members, civilian employees and contractors who use credentials to access Pentagon computer systems and facilities.

HOW THIS STORY WAS MADE

Reconstructed on 2 October 2026. The machine was off on this day, so no feed was read and no run took place. This edition was rebuilt afterwards from sources that keep history (Google News's dated search, GDELT, Reddit) and from articles the next runs still found, ranked as of the day's end: one edition, not the day's four runs.

Written from 3 articles, headlines and summaries only; 3 independent newsrooms once syndicated copies count as one; the editor kept it as written.
