Trump directs US agencies to call AI ‘Super Intelligence’

President Donald Trump has directed US federal agencies to use the term “Super Intelligence,” or SI, instead of artificial intelligence in government documents, Deutsche Welle reported.
Trump had criticized “artificial intelligence” as an inaccurate and inelegant name on Truth Social and suggested alternatives including “superior,” “extreme” and “supreme” intelligence. In a three-day social media poll, his followers selected “Super Intelligence” over “Superior Intelligence” by roughly 65% to 35%. Trump then announced the new federal terminology at the United Nations General Assembly.
The technology industry and researchers have not adopted the change. Computer scientists generally use “superintelligence” to describe a potential future system capable of outperforming humans broadly, rather than today’s AI models. Pedro Domingos, a University of Washington computer science professor, told DW that describing current AI as superintelligence is misleading because it performs tasks differently from humans rather than possessing universally superior intelligence.
The term “artificial intelligence” was coined at a 1956 workshop at Dartmouth College, with “artificial” referring to technology made by humans. It has remained the standard term despite longstanding objections that the wording can imply something fake.
HOW THIS STORY WAS MADE
Reconstructed on 2 October 2026. The machine was off on this day, so no feed was read and no run took place. This edition was rebuilt afterwards from sources that keep history (Google News's dated search, GDELT, Reddit) and from articles the next runs still found, ranked as of the day's end: one edition, not the day's four runs.
Written from 2 articles, headlines and summaries only; 2 independent newsrooms once syndicated copies count as one; the editor kept it as written.
