Israel’s Netanyahu met UAE president in Abu Dhabi, governments confirm

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, in a visit that both governments confirmed late Monday. Middle East Eye described the acknowledgment as the UAE’s first confirmation of a Netanyahu visit.

An Emirati statement said the leaders discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them. Netanyahu’s office said the meeting focused on closer ties and regional challenges.

Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu sought a denial from Sheikh Mohamed of an earlier report that the UAE president had warned him about a possible Hamas attack before October 7, 2023. Netanyahu’s office denied both that he made such a request and the original claim that he received a warning.

Before the visit was officially confirmed, Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security service filed a complaint with the chief military censor over Channel 12’s disclosure of the trip while Netanyahu’s plane remained outside Israeli airspace. A statement from Netanyahu’s office accused the broadcaster of a serious censorship violation that endangered Netanyahu, his wife and the delegation, which included the head of the Mossad intelligence agency.

The UAE and Israel established diplomatic relations under the 2020 Abraham Accords. Their relations have since faced strains over Israel’s war in Gaza.
