An Israeli airstrike on an apartment building in Gaza City killed Izz al-Din al-Beik, the commander of Hamas’s armed wing in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.
The strike hit the building in the Nassr neighborhood early Tuesday. Hamas confirmed al-Beik’s death, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement that the Israeli military had killed him. Al-Shifa Hospital said a second person later died from injuries sustained in the attack.
Al-Beik had taken command of the Qassam Brigades in northern Gaza after senior commander Ahmed al-Ghandour. Ynetnews reported that al-Beik had survived an earlier assassination attempt in May.
The attack followed an increase in Israeli strikes targeting Hamas members in Gaza. The Israeli military says it has killed at least 20 Hamas members this month, including senior commanders and people it alleges participated in the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel or held Israeli captives.
Hamas has accused Israel of undermining the U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement reached last October. Negotiators have not agreed on terms for Hamas to disarm or for Israeli troops to withdraw, while Israeli attacks on Gaza have continued.
HOW THIS STORY WAS MADE
Reconstructed on 2 October 2026. The machine was off on this day, so no feed was read and no run took place. This edition was rebuilt afterwards from sources that keep history (Google News's dated search, GDELT, Reddit) and from articles the next runs still found, ranked as of the day's end: one edition, not the day's four runs.
Written from 5 articles, headlines and summaries only; 5 independent newsrooms once syndicated copies count as one; the editor kept it as written.
