Christa Gail Pike survives attempted Tennessee execution after Supreme Court lifts stay

Christa Gail Pike remained alive after Tennessee officials administered two doses of pentobarbital in an attempted execution Wednesday, according to CNN. The attempt followed a U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning an appeals court stay and allowing the execution to proceed.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed for a murder committed in 1995, when she was 18. She would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.

Her attorneys said Pike was loudly snoring after the execution attempt and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. They said they had not been informed of her condition. Media witnesses reported that Pike remained awake after being strapped to a gurney and later asked officials whether her arm was supposed to feel as it did. The second drug dose had been administered by 8:26 p.m., witnesses said.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed every step of the state’s approved execution protocol. That protocol provides for a second set of drug syringes if the prisoner remains alive after the first dose but does not specify what should happen if the second dose also fails.

Gov. Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive third-party review and halted Tennessee’s remaining scheduled execution for the year. Robin M. Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, described Pike’s survival after receiving the execution drugs as unprecedented.
