Russian aerial attacks struck two major bridges across Kyiv’s Dnipro River this week, injuring two people and disrupting travel between the Ukrainian capital’s eastern and western banks.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a strike hit the Pivnichnyi, or Northern, Bridge on Saturday, damaging its road surface and overhead trolleybus wires. Traffic from the left bank to the right bank was blocked, causing congestion.
The attack followed several drone strikes on the Pivdennyi, or Southern, Bridge beginning Thursday. Cars and a metro train were crossing during one attack, but no passengers or crew were injured. Traffic and metro service were temporarily suspended while emergency crews inspected the structure; an initial assessment found no critical structural damage.
Other recent strikes damaged communications infrastructure, warehouses and buildings in Kyiv. Dream Line said its data center was destroyed but that services and customer data had been transferred to backup sites. Several other data center operators and internet providers have also reported damage or outages.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the bridges were used to transfer Ukrainian troops and military cargo. Moscow also warned foreign nationals and diplomats to leave Kyiv and said its attacks would continue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would keep striking Russian oil refineries in response, while avoiding civilian targets. He also urged allied governments to tighten sanctions and prevent foreign-made components from reaching Russian drone and missile production.
