Ukrainian forces struck oil infrastructure in Russia’s Volgograd and Samara regions overnight, Ukraine’s General Staff said on Oct. 2, reporting fires and explosions at the targeted facilities.
The General Staff identified the sites as the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka refinery in Volgograd Oblast and the Samara line-production control station near Prosvet. Reports from Ukrainian outlets also described fires near an oil refinery and chemical plant in Volgograd and at a Transneft hub in Samara.
The Lukoil-owned Volgograd refinery is one of Russia’s largest oil-processing facilities, with annual capacity of about 15 million metric tons of crude. The Samara station blends crude grades used to produce Urals, Russia’s main oil-export blend. Both facilities have previously been targeted by Ukrainian forces.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces conducted operations over the previous day in the Black Sea and in Russia’s Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Samara and Krasnodar regions. He said airfields, industrial sites, oil refineries, a missile and space center, and an ammunition depot were targeted.
Ukraine has increased long-range attacks on Russian refineries, depots and oil-transport infrastructure, saying the campaign is intended to disrupt military fuel supplies and reduce Russia’s energy revenue. The extent of the latest damage was not independently confirmed.
