Saudi-backed Yemeni forces launched a major offensive against the Houthis as a Saudi-led coalition intensified air operations in Yemen, while the rebel group claimed missile and drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities.
Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, announced Sunday that military operations had begun to retake Houthi-held territory and restore state authority nationwide. The Saudi-led coalition said it was providing air support, and coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki said 100 fighter jets were involved. The scale of the campaign could not immediately be independently verified.
The National reported Monday that government forces had taken control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the nearby Dhubab area and the port city of Mokha. That account followed reports that the Houthis had recently seized Mokha, Red Sea islands and other territory during a rapid coastal advance. The Houthis also reportedly captured Turbah, a strategically located town southwest of Taiz.
The Houthis said they fired ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco facilities in Riyadh and the Khurais area, causing large fires. Saudi Arabia did not immediately confirm those claims. The group said the attacks were retaliation for 50 Saudi-led air and missile strikes on Yemen over 12 hours; Houthi media separately reported 26 strikes on Sanaa on October 3.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saudi Arabia had a right to defend itself and that Washington would honor its defense and security agreement with the kingdom, but did not specify what assistance the United States would provide.
