Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched a major military campaign to retake territory held by the Iran-aligned Houthis, following renewed fighting and Houthi gains around the strategic city of Taiz and the Red Sea coast.
Presidential Leadership Council chief Rashad al-Alimi announced the operation in a televised address on Sunday, saying government forces would seek to restore state authority across the country. The Saudi-backed military reported strikes against Houthi positions in Sanaa, Saada, Taiz and other areas using aircraft, drones, missiles and artillery.
Government-aligned forces said Monday that they had advanced north along the Red Sea coast and recaptured Dhubab and the port city of Mocha, according to Al Jazeera. Those battlefield claims were not independently confirmed. A military spokesperson separately claimed that 1,122 attacks had killed about 1,747 Houthi fighters and destroyed or disabled 364 vehicles and other units; the Houthis did not confirm those figures.
The offensive follows a Houthi advance that seized Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The group also captured a key supply road between government-held Aden and Taiz, effectively isolating Taiz, according to reports citing Yemeni military sources.
The escalation has included cross-border attacks. The Houthis said they targeted Saudi Aramco facilities near Riyadh and in eastern Saudi Arabia with missiles and drones, while accusing the Saudi-led coalition of dozens of strikes on Sanaa. Saudi authorities had not publicly confirmed the claimed Aramco attacks.
