The U.S. Coast Guard found a debris field Saturday night from a medical jet that disappeared near Nantucket while flying from Bermuda to Boston with six people aboard, CBS News and Al Jazeera reported. Search crews continued looking for the aircraft’s occupants overnight.
The Canadian-registered Gulfstream G-100 left Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport at about 11:40 p.m. Eastern time Friday and was scheduled to land at Boston Logan International Airport around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. The Federal Aviation Administration lost contact with the plane at about 1 a.m. and issued a search-and-rescue alert.
The aircraft, registered to Canada-based Latitude Air Ambulance, was carrying four crew members and two passengers. The Coast Guard said four of those aboard were Canadian nationals and two were Bermudian nationals.
FlightAware data cited by CBS News showed the jet rapidly descending from about 24,000 feet to 11,000 feet before contact was lost, roughly one hour and 45 minutes after departure.
The Coast Guard deployed aircraft, a helicopter, a motor lifeboat and a fast-response cutter to the search area off Nantucket. Crews covered 1,644 square miles during the first 27 hours of the operation. Canadian and Bermudian officials said they were monitoring the search and had been in contact with relevant authorities and the families of those aboard.
