Six people are presumed dead after the U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for a medical transport jet that crashed near Nantucket while flying from Bermuda to Boston.
The Gulfstream G100, operated by Canada-based Latitude Air Ambulance as Heartbeat 104, was carrying two pilots, two medical staff members, a patient and the patient’s relative. The aircraft departed Bermuda early Saturday and was bound for Boston Logan International Airport when authorities lost contact with it. The Federal Aviation Administration alerted the Coast Guard at about 2 a.m.
Search teams found debris off Nantucket and confirmed it came from the aircraft. The Coast Guard ended the operation Sunday after about 66 hours of searching by air and sea.
The two passengers were Bermudian and the four crew members were Canadian, authorities said. Bermuda police identified the patient as Marilyn Lavonne Bean, 66, and her son and escort as Sergio Wayne Lottimore, 41. The crew members’ names were not immediately released.
Latitude said the six occupants must now be presumed to have died. “Suspending a search is not an easy decision,” Coast Guard Rear Adm. Matthew Lake said.
Flight-tracking data showed the jet descending steeply before it disappeared, while radio transmissions indicated electrical failures and difficulty communicating with air traffic controllers. Authorities have not determined the cause. Latitude said it would cooperate with U.S. and Canadian transportation safety investigators during recovery efforts and the investigation.
