Asos is investigating a data breach after customers received a push notification through the online fashion retailer’s app claiming that hackers had compromised company systems and threatening to leak data.
The notification, titled “Asos hacked,” was sent to thousands of customers on Tuesday. Addressed to the company’s data protection officer and IT team, it said: “We have fully compromised the Snowflake instance. Engage with us, or we will leak it.” It included a link to a newly created Telegram channel using the name Xuanye Group.
The BBC later reported that Asos said customers’ personal information “may have been accessed.” The scope of the breach and the types of information potentially exposed were not immediately clear. Asos’s website and app remained online while the company investigated.
Cybersecurity specialists said sending a notification through the official app could indicate access to a system separate from the Snowflake cloud data platform cited in the message. The hackers’ claims about the extent of their access have not been independently verified.
Asos shares fell as much as 13% in London before recovering some of their losses. Snowflake shares also declined in premarket US trading. Security experts warned customers to be cautious of emails or texts seeking payment details, password resets or other personal information following publicity about the incident.
