Fighting between Saudi-backed forces and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis intensified this week, with renewed air operations over Yemen and missile and drone attacks claimed against sites across Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi-led coalition said 100 fighter jets were supporting Yemeni government forces and providing air protection over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Houthis said Saudi Arabia carried out 26 airstrikes on the capital, Sanaa, on October 3; an AFP correspondent reported hearing explosions and seeing fighter jets. The scale and results of the broader campaign have not been independently verified.
The escalation followed Houthi territorial gains in southwestern and coastal Yemen. The group said it captured Turbah, on a road between Taiz and Aden, after earlier taking Mokha and several Red Sea islands. Saudi-backed Yemeni factions subsequently announced counteroffensives against Houthi positions near the coast.
Saudi authorities said attacks on airports in Jazan and Najran on Monday caused material damage and left three people with minor injuries, without initially identifying the attackers. The Houthis claimed a wider series of missile and drone strikes against airports, military sites and an Aramco refinery. On Tuesday, they separately said they targeted Abha International Airport with missiles; Saudi Arabia had not confirmed that claim.
The Saudi-led coalition also said it destroyed a depot containing 20 ballistic missiles in northwestern Yemen. Jordan and the Gulf Cooperation Council condemned the attacks on Saudi civilian infrastructure.
