Yemeni Government Forces Launch Broad Offensive Against Houthis

publishers 50articles 82first reported 1 Oct, 19:05 UTCdeveloping since 2 Oct · 28 editions

Yemen’s internationally recognized government launched a major offensive against the Iran-backed Houthis, carrying out strikes and ground operations across several provinces under air cover from a Saudi-led coalition.

Government-aligned forces said they retook Dhubab and other areas near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, while CNBC reported that the government also claimed to have recaptured the Red Sea port of Mokha. The Houthis reportedly denied losing Mokha, and the competing claims could not be independently verified. On Tuesday, government forces also announced advances in Al-Wazi’iyah district in Taiz province and on the southern front in Marib.

The Saudi-led coalition said 100 fighter jets supported the campaign and struck hundreds of Houthi targets. Government military spokesman Majid Abdullah al-Nuzaili separately claimed that 1,122 attacks had killed about 1,747 Houthi fighters and destroyed or disabled 364 vehicles and other units. Those figures were not independently confirmed.

The operation followed recent Houthi gains, including the capture of territory near Taiz and the cutting of a key road linking the city with the government-held interim capital, Aden. More than 70 people were reportedly killed in fighting around Taiz over one day, according to AFP.

The Houthis also claimed missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports, oil facilities and military sites. Saudi aviation authorities said attacks on airports in Jazan and Najran injured three people and caused limited damage. Turkey and Pakistan agreed to deploy forces to Saudi Arabia under a collective defense agreement as the fighting intensified.
