Flávio Bolsonaro and Lula Head to Runoff After Tight Brazil Vote

publishers 27articles 32first reported 4 Oct, 16:52 UTCdeveloping since 4 Oct · 28 editions

Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will contest a presidential runoff on October 25 after neither secured an outright victory in the October 4 first round.

With 99.9% of ballots counted, Bolsonaro, the Liberal Party candidate and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, had 47.04% of valid votes, while Lula of the Workers’ Party had 45.15%, according to figures from Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court reported by The Rio Times.

Bolsonaro led in 15 of Brazil’s 27 federative units, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. Lula led in 12, winning all nine northeastern states. In Minas Gerais, Brazil’s second-largest electorate, Bolsonaro held a lead of about 589,000 votes, reversing Lula’s narrow advantage there in the 2022 runoff.

Lula acknowledged that he had expected a first-round victory but pledged to prevail “in overtime,” according to an AFP report published by the Buenos Aires Times. Workers’ Party President Edinho Silva said the campaign would contrast the candidates’ proposals and ask voters to reflect on their choice.

Brazilian financial markets rallied after Bolsonaro’s stronger-than-expected result. Investors cited expectations that his administration could pursue spending restraint and other fiscal changes, although he has not presented a detailed plan. The currency strengthened and swap rates fell further on Tuesday, while the iShares MSCI Brazil exchange-traded fund rose after record trading volumes and inflows on Monday.
