A Russian strike hit civilian buses in Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, killing at least 30 people and injuring at least 18, Ukrainian authorities said Thursday. Al Jazeera and CNN reported a death toll of at least 33 as information continued to emerge.
Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk regional military administration, accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians. Public transport was suspended in Kramatorsk and neighboring Sloviansk after officials said the security situation had sharply deteriorated.
The attack came amid an intensified wave of Russian missile and drone strikes ahead of winter. In the northern city of Pryluky, the toll from a missile strike a day earlier rose to 22 dead, including five children, while at least 54 people were injured. Rescue crews continued searching the remains of a residential building.
Separate attacks severely disrupted essential services in Kyiv. A strike on a major energy facility caused outages across much of the capital, temporarily halting metro trains and escalators and interrupting parts of the water and public transport networks. Electricity had returned to parts of Kyiv’s right bank by early Friday, while areas east of the Dnipro River remained without power.
Late Wednesday, Russian drones also struck Kyiv’s Obolonskyi and Desnianskyi districts, killing four people and injuring 12, including four children, police said. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to NATO countries for additional air-defense equipment, aircraft ammunition and interceptor investment.
