A Russian aerial bomb strike on two civilian buses in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk killed at least 33 people and wounded 18 on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said.
The attack hit a street where the buses were operating, near what President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as an ordinary public transport stop. Images released by Ukrainian police showed bodies and debris in the road and the burned shell of a bus. A second bus also caught fire, according to officials.
Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians. Moscow did not immediately comment on the strike and has repeatedly denied targeting civilians. Authorities suspended public transport in Kramatorsk and neighboring Sloviansk because of the worsening security situation.
Kramatorsk and Sloviansk are major Ukrainian-held cities in the Donetsk region, where Russian forces have increased drone and guided-bomb attacks. The strike followed a broader wave of attacks across Ukraine. A Russian attack on a residential building in Pryluky on Wednesday killed 22 people, including children, Ukrainian officials said. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said separate attacks on the capital Thursday killed three people and wounded 14.
Zelenskyy called for additional air-defense equipment and ammunition from Ukraine’s partners.
