Three Saudi nationals, including a Saudia pilot, were killed in two Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said Friday.
The authority said one attack struck airport facilities and another targeted a Saudia aircraft. Several people suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe, and the strikes caused material damage. Saudia identified the pilot as Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami and said one of its aircraft was damaged.
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis claimed the attacks. A Houthi military spokesperson said the group launched a ballistic missile at the airport and claimed it hit its target, damaged the facility and disrupted air traffic.
Hundreds of departures from Saudi Arabia were canceled Thursday, according to Cirium data cited by CNBC. The aviation authority said Friday that King Khalid airport had reopened and air traffic had returned to normal.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said it had destroyed three missile launchers used by the group and promised a “firm response” to attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency subsequently expanded its recommendation that airlines avoid parts of Saudi airspace, warning that recent attacks demonstrated the Houthis’ ability and intent to strike deeper inside the country. Several aviation outlets also reported that Delta Air Lines was reconsidering or delaying its planned Riyadh service amid the security concerns.
