Three Saudi citizens, including a Saudia pilot, were killed in two attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said. Several Saudi citizens and residents of other nationalities were injured.
The authority said one attack struck airport facilities and another hit a Saudia aircraft. The airline said the aircraft was on the ground without passengers aboard and was damaged. Airport operations and air traffic later resumed, although disruption continued into Friday.
Yemen’s Houthis claimed they attacked the Riyadh airport with two missiles. The group also said it targeted an airport in Najran and an airbase in Khamis Mushait, claims Saudi authorities had not confirmed. Saudi officials said debris from an intercepted missile damaged a kindergarten and a medical complex in Riyadh, without reporting casualties at those sites.
The attacks followed strikes on Riyadh and Abha airports on October 6 and 7 that Saudi authorities said killed three people and injured dozens.
Pakistan International Airlines temporarily suspended Riyadh operations on Friday, cancelling flights PK-753 from Islamabad and PK-754 from Riyadh. PIA asked passengers to confirm flight status before travelling to airports. Pakistan’s airport authority said other flights to Saudi Arabia were operating normally.
Lufthansa Group, IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air also suspended or cancelled Riyadh services. Flightradar24 data cited by Dawn showed 104 cancellations and 154 delays at Riyadh airport on Friday, after 335 cancellations on Thursday.
