Israel held memorials Wednesday for the victims of the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack, while Israeli strikes continued in Gaza and the country prepared for its first parliamentary election since the assault.

Families and survivors gathered at the Nova music festival site and Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where hundreds were killed three years ago. A national ceremony in Tel Aviv included tributes to those killed, wounded and taken hostage. The attack killed about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken into Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country was united in mourning. Protesters renewed calls for an independent state inquiry into the security failures surrounding the attack, while opposition figures criticized the government’s response. Israel is scheduled to vote on October 27.

In Gaza, Palestinian officials said Israeli strikes on the anniversary killed five people. Israel’s military said one strike killed two Hamas members near the Yellow Line separating Israeli- and Hamas-controlled areas; Gaza’s civil defence agency said one of those killed was one of its volunteers. Hospitals reported additional deaths in Gaza City and Khan Younis.

Israel’s offensive following the 2023 attack has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, whose figures are used by the United Nations. Although a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect in October 2025 and all hostages have since been returned, violence has continued. Reconstruction remains limited amid unresolved disputes over Hamas’s disarmament and an Israeli troop withdrawal.
