King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was attacked again Saturday, wounding several people and forcing authorities to suspend operations, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest attack, which followed several days of strikes attributed to Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis.
The airport was targeted twice Thursday. Saudi authorities said one attack struck airport facilities and another targeted a Saudia aircraft. Deutsche Welle reported that three Saudi citizens were killed and several people of different nationalities were injured, while the South China Morning Post said the week’s earlier attacks had killed four people.
Hundreds of flights were canceled after Thursday’s strikes, according to FlightAware. Air India suspended service through Saturday, while Lufthansa Group airlines halted Riyadh flights through October 16. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency advised carriers to avoid additional parts of Saudi airspace, citing the Houthis’ demonstrated ability and intent to strike deeper inside the kingdom.
The Saudi-led coalition said Friday that it had destroyed three Houthi rocket-launch platforms and promised a “firm response” to attacks on civilians. The Houthis, who have targeted Saudi airports for three consecutive days, also warned employees at Saudi oil facilities that those sites remain targets.
