Brazilian police rescued 13 children held hostage at a kindergarten in Curitiba on Friday, killing the man who threatened them after negotiations lasting as long as three hours, officials said.
Parana state police spokesperson Leticia Martins said the man jumped a gate and entered a classroom in the Sao Braz neighborhood. He was armed with a knife and an object initially believed to be a firearm but later found to be fake. Police said he spread a flammable substance around the room and held a lighter while keeping the children close to him, including one on his lap.
Special forces commander Alexandre Lopes Dias said officers intervened after the children became increasingly distressed and the hostage-taker began physically assaulting them. Police used what they described as a tactical approach to enter the classroom and remove the children. Officials did not identify the man or explain how he was killed.
All 13 children survived. At least one child was injured, although authorities did not provide details about the injury. Curitiba Mayor Eduardo Pimentel said the children were alive and safe following the rescue.
City officials said the children and kindergarten staff would be offered psychological support. Police did not disclose a motive for the hostage-taking.
