Houthi-run media said Saudi Arabia struck an oil facility west of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Tuesday after the Saudi-led coalition warned civilians to evacuate the site ahead of a military operation.
An AFP correspondent reported hearing an explosion, while the Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah television channel said the Yemen Petroleum Company facility in Al-Sabaha had been targeted. The Saudi-led coalition had not confirmed the reported strike.
The evacuation warning prompted residents fearing shortages to queue at fuel stations. The petroleum company said the Al-Sabaha site held no petroleum stocks and that supplies remained available at secure locations in quantities sufficient to meet demand.
Before the reported strike, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree threatened retaliatory attacks on Riyadh’s international airport and on a refinery and an Aramco facility in Dammam. The coalition said Tuesday that it intercepted three drones north of Riyadh and two ballistic missiles aimed at Khamis Mushait in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
The escalation followed a missile attack Saturday on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that killed 13 people and injured more than 300, according to reports citing Saudi authorities. Another attack Sunday killed one person. Saudi Arabia’s cabinet said the Houthis would face “consequences,” while Media Minister Salman Al Dosary said the kingdom would remain united and continue its development efforts despite the attacks.
