Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainians must choose their own leader after US President Donald Trump called for him to be replaced amid a dispute over Russian diesel and attacks on energy infrastructure.
Trump said Saturday that Ukraine needed a president capable of reaching a peace agreement, accusing Zelenskyy of failing to end the war and warning Kyiv to stop striking Russian oil refineries. He argued that those attacks had contributed to higher diesel prices. His remarks followed an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin under which Washington would ease sanctions to allow purchases of Russian diesel, intended to reduce fuel costs before November’s US midterm elections.
Zelenskyy said Sunday that Ukraine could organize an election if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire. He also reiterated that Kyiv was prepared for a broader ceasefire, or one limited to energy infrastructure, if Moscow reciprocated. Separately, he told Axios that Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire was “news for me,” but said he would accept it once it began.
The dispute unfolded alongside deadly Russian strikes. Ukrainian officials said an attack on Zaporizhzhia killed 20 people, including three children. Zelenskyy described the bombardment as Russia’s response to the diesel arrangement and warned that increased energy revenue would help Moscow finance the war.
British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said Britain stood behind Zelenskyy and that only Ukrainians should determine their leadership. He added that London preferred stronger sanctions on Russia while seeking to preserve Western unity.
