Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez criticised the club’s leadership and summer recruitment after Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atlético Madrid, calling for greater ambition and support for manager Michael Carrick.

Martínez said United’s performance was “really poor” and argued that responsibility for the club’s difficult start should extend beyond the players and manager. He specifically said he expected more from director of football Jason Wilcox and questioned whether United had assembled a squad capable of competing with other leading teams.

“We take the responsibility but also as a club I expect more,” Martínez told CBS Sports. “We need more ambition. We need to talk more about winning the Champions League, to talk about winning the Premier League.” He also described a lack of confidence and cohesion in the team, saying rotation and insufficient squad depth had contributed to its problems.

United conceded to Pablo Barrios inside the opening minute before Leny Yoro was sent off and substitute Ademola Lookman completed Atlético’s victory. Martínez said United struggled to connect passes, displayed negative body language and failed to take their chances.

Carrick declined to respond in detail, saying he had not watched the interviews and needed to establish the facts before deciding whether action was required. He suggested Martínez’s remarks may have reflected the emotion of the defeat and said United must quickly turn their attention to Sunday’s Premier League match at Leeds.
