Philadelphia police Officer Shane Seiber was killed and his partner was wounded early Saturday after responding to a report of a man with a gun in West Philadelphia, authorities said.
The officers encountered gunfire after approaching a porch on the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly after midnight, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said. Seiber, 40, was shot three times, while his 33-year-old partner was shot 12 times, according to CNN. Both were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and underwent surgery. Seiber died at the hospital; the other officer was listed in stable condition, though Bethel said he was “not out of the woods yet.”
The gunman allegedly took a weapon from one of the wounded officers and fired at additional police arriving at the scene. SWAT officers later found the suspect in a tree and took him into custody. Police recovered a shotgun and two handguns, including the officer’s weapon.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Eric Lewis, 35, is being charged with homicide in Seiber’s death. Lewis also faces attempted homicide and other charges for allegedly shooting Seiber’s partner and firing at nine responding officers.
Seiber was a 10-year department veteran, husband and father of two children, ages seven and three. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered U.S. and state flags lowered to half-staff in his memory.
