A 14-year-old pupil was arrested after opening fire at Joseph Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille, on Monday, wounding the principal and a teacher, French officials said.
The teenager entered the school with a hunting shotgun concealed in a guitar case and fired several times across two floors, according to prosecutors and local officials. The 53-year-old principal was reportedly hit in the leg and lower back, while a 37-year-old teacher was wounded in the thigh. Both were hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. A third person sustained a minor injury, while no pupils were physically harmed.
A staff member disarmed and restrained the teenager in a corridor before police arrived. Students were rapidly confined or evacuated, and psychological support was established at the school.
The Marseille prosecutor’s office opened an attempted-murder investigation. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said both of the suspect’s parents were also taken into custody; French media reported that weapons were found during a search of the family home.
The motive remained unclear. Police and local officials said there was no apparent connection between the shooting and recent protests over staffing and conditions at French schools, noting that Joseph Lakanal had not been affected by protest blockades.
