Greta Gerwig has unveiled the first trailer for *Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew*, her adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ 1955 prequel for Netflix. The footage, set to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” introduces the creation of Narnia and offers glimpses of characters including Aslan and the White Witch.
Gerwig presented the trailer and behind-the-scenes footage Tuesday on an IMAX screen at AMC Lincoln Center in New York, where she discussed the film with Stephen Colbert. The trailer was subsequently released online.
The story follows two children in 1900 London who use a magic ring to enter another world and witness Narnia’s creation by the lion Aslan. Gerwig said she began drafting the film in 2020 and 2021 after telling Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos that she knew how to make films for the big screen. According to the Associated Press report cited by The Indian Express, the production has a $280 million budget.
Netflix plans a wide theatrical release beginning Feb. 12, 2027, followed by a streaming debut April 2. The film begins Gerwig’s adaptation with the sixth Narnia novel published rather than *The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe*. Early online reaction to the effects was divided, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with some viewers praising the footage and others criticizing its reliance on computer-generated imagery.
