Delhi Police detained leaders of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party after protesters crossed barricades and entered Jantar Mantar on Tuesday, defying restrictions at the prominent New Delhi protest site.
A video posted by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke showed protesters climbing over barricades, running into the site and waving India’s national flag before police pursued them. The CJP identified detained leaders as Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ajinkya Shinde. Ranka and Das were subsequently sent to five days in judicial custody, while Shinde was released on a personal bond, according to Scroll.in. The leaders were accused of trespassing, violating a bond and obstructing a public servant.
The action followed Delhi Police’s decision on Monday to remove Jantar Mantar from its list of designated protest venues. Police named Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as alternatives. Jantar Mantar had been sealed with metal barricades and guarded by a heavy police presence.
The CJP and opposition parties have been protesting to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They allege that a special revision of electoral rolls improperly deleted voters and benefited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party. The Election Commission of India has denied wrongdoing.
Opposition politicians condemned the arrests. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said waving the national flag during a peaceful protest was not a crime and argued that Jantar Mantar belongs to the public.
